Chapter Twenty-One

Taming

Eric continued talking and Luke let his mind wander towards the potential bonds all around him. He cautiously extended his mind to the closest one besides Ryseth and felt joy at the contact. The dragon welcomed him and poured love into him. He barely maintained the solemn expression that he felt he ought to wear while Eric talked to his people. Vaguely, he heard Eric mention the tribe’s plans but there was another dragon pushing into his mind eagerly, and another.

He wanted to greet them all individually but they were all so excited that they kept bumping against each other in his mind and their psychic scents blurred. He ordered them to wait and they obeyed, even the ones he hadn’t bonded with yet. One by one, he embraced each dragon in his mind, sharing the unconditional love that he hadn’t imagined possible. He could sense his dragonlings as well and they were excited to have older brothers. Even the female, who still grumped occasionally about sharing with her brothers, expressed curiosity.

Eric had stopped talking, he realized, and he pulled his mind away from the dragons reluctantly. The man smiled and took his arm, leading him to a tent and settling him into a chair.

“I won’t interrupt you while you’re communicating, and neither will anyone else,” Eric said, then went to stand guard at the entrance to the tent. People milled about, as curious as their dragons, but he couldn’t face them. He could only face his dragons.

Soon, he had bonded to every dragon in a two-mile radius. A few dragons entered his radius after he had begun greeting everyone and they also nuzzled him for a bond. He could barely believe how much pleasure his bonds could give him. His mental walls were still impenetrable, but he realized the adult dragons could flit in and out without disturbing them. His shields didn’t seem to work against them and oddly, he didn’t mind.

He was about to return to the real world when a new dragon entered his radius. The dragon was frightened, and it was a female. He immediately reached out to comfort her and she fled into the love he offered her. Someone was trying to tame her; someone she didn’t want. He reassured her that no one would tame her. She was still frightened and he considered. She was too frightened of humans to come here, but where else could she be safe?

He reached out beyond his radius, sending out a message to his dragons, the ones Eric called Untamable. He felt a vague reply, though he was too far to really communicate. But he could sense their direction and he urged his new female to go to them. She was hesitant and he could feel awe and respect through the bond, and he reassured her again that they would protect her. He pushed a message towards his dragons, hoping they would receive it and protect the precious female.

She flew out of his radius towards the Untamable and he sighed.
